EPL: Arsenal crush Sunderland 3-0, extend nine points lead

Arsenal cruised to a comfortable 3–0 victory over Sunderland in their Premier League clash at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

The visitors nearly made a dream start, but Kai Havertz produced a crucial clearance inside five minutes to stop Brian Brobbey from putting Sunderland ahead.

Arsenal’s first real chance arrived in the 23rd minute when Trai Hume almost diverted Noni Madueke’s cross into his own net.

On the hour mark, Declan Rice attempted to break the deadlock with a long-range effort, but his shot drifted wide.

The breakthrough eventually came just before the break. Martin Zubimendi, who scored against Leeds United in his previous outing, fired a powerful effort past Robin Roefs at the near post in the 42nd minute to give the hosts the lead.

The goal took his league tally to five this season, surpassing his previous best of four in the 2023/24 campaign.
Gabriel Jesus thought he had won a penalty moments later after being challenged by Daniel Ballard, but the offside flag had already gone up in the build-up.

Havertz then came close to doubling Arsenal’s advantage in first-half stoppage time, narrowly missing the target with a left-footed strike.

Sunderland started the second half with more urgency, forcing David Raya into his first save as he pushed away Chemsdine Talbi’s effort.

The Arsenal goalkeeper almost gifted the visitors an equaliser with a poor clearance, but William Saliba stepped in to clear the danger.

Substitute Viktor Gyokeres made the points safe for the league leaders, drilling a low shot into the bottom corner to make it 2–0.

The striker added his second deep into stoppage time, finishing into an empty net after a swift counterattack.

The result sees Arsenal stretch their advantage at the top of the table to nine points.
