El-Rufai dismisses exile rumours to remain in Nigeria despite alleged threats

Former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has strongly refuted speculation regarding his potential self-imposed exile, emphasizing his determination to stay in Nigeria despite reports of alleged threats of arrest.

El-Rufai, known for his outspoken criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s administration and the All Progressives Congress, has faced backlash from some party members who have linked his stance to his failed ministerial nomination.

In response to the rumours of an impending arrest, El-Rufai addressed claims made by an online user, confirming that similar threats have been made against him since July 2024, following a report by the Kaduna State Assembly.

He revealed that these threats were part of efforts to pressure him into going into self-imposed exile, but he remains firm in his decision to stay in the country.

The former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory also stated that he has suspended personal plans, such as academic and language-learning commitments, to focus on his life and activism in Nigeria. He emphasized that he can no longer stay silent in the face of ongoing political issues.

Although acknowledging the risks of political repression, El-Rufai maintained a defiant stance, citing past experiences of being arrested and detained for expressing his views. He stressed that such challenges have not deterred him, and he remains committed to engaging in the political process.

Currently in Egypt, El-Rufai confirmed that he plans to return to Nigeria in time for the February 20, 2025, launch of former President Ibrahim Babangida’s memoirs. He made it clear that his return is imminent, despite efforts to undermine his presence in the country.

In his final remarks, El-Rufai reaffirmed his resolve, expressing that he places his trust solely in Allah, with no fear of mortal threats, and remains focused on his future plans despite the challenges ahead.

“They have sent similar messages of intimidation and threats through many of my friends, family, and political associates because they want me to go on self-imposed exile. I will not,” he declared.

“I have now put all my previous academic and language-learning plans on hold and will spend more time in Nigeria than ever before. Silence is no longer golden. Inaction has never been an option,” he stated.

He continued, “The arrest, detention and torture of perceived political enemies are nothing new in human affairs. I have been arrested and detained thrice in the past for expressing my views of previous governments.

“There is always a morning after the arrest or detention or torture, and political life continues. As for death, it when (is) Allah destines it, and it is ultimately the date of every human.”

“For the attention of the pathetic characters that don’t sleep well whenever I am in Nigeria, take notice that I intend to return in time for the launch of Pres IBB’s memoirs, in sha Allah, scheduled for 20th February,” he added.
