El-Rufai appears in court as ICPC continues corruption trial in Kaduna

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, on Monday appeared before the Federal High Court sitting in Kaduna as proceedings continued in his ongoing corruption trial filed by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission.

El-Rufai, who governed the state between 2015 and 2023, arrived at the court around 9:30 a.m. in the company of operatives of the ICPC, the Department of State Services, and the Nigeria Police Force.

The ICPC is prosecuting the former governor over allegations bordering on abuse of office, fraud, and financial misconduct during his tenure.

According to the commission, certain government funds were allegedly released for projects that were either not executed or were not properly accounted for.

El-Rufai, however, has consistently denied the allegations, insisting on his innocence throughout the proceedings.

At Monday’s sitting, the court was expected to continue hearing motions and arguments from both the prosecution and defence as the trial progresses.

The presiding judge, Justice Rilwan Aikawa, had earlier granted El-Rufai bail in the sum of ₦200 million with conditions requiring two sureties, including a serving or retired civil servant on Grade Level 15 and a recognised traditional ruler.

Although his legal team has sought a variation of the bail terms, another Kaduna State High Court, presided over by Justice Darius Khobo, had previously declined a separate bail application, citing concerns that his influence could interfere with ongoing investigations.

The case is expected to continue as both sides present further arguments before the court.
