Dembélé shines as PSG reclaim Ligue 1 top spot

Paris Saint-Germain reclaimed top spot in Ligue 1 with a commanding 3-0 victory over Lille at the Parc des Princes, turning early nerves into a statement performance.

Ousmane Dembélé was the star of the night, striking twice to lead Luis Enrique’s side back to the summit and pile pressure on Lens.

The reigning 2025 Ballon d’Or winner broke the deadlock with a precise effort from outside the area, before adding a sublime second goal with a deft lob. Bradley Barcola wrapped up the points deep into stoppage time.

PSG were almost caught cold in the opening minutes when Lille threatened to score in just the second minute.

Olivier Giroud found space inside the box and attempted to chip Lucas Chevalier, only for his effort to crash off the crossbar, with the goalkeeper quickly reacting to deny Ethan Mbappé on the rebound.

That early scare sparked PSG into life. With their first attempt of the game in the 13th minute, they found the breakthrough as Fabián Ruiz won the ball high up the pitch and Vitinha fed Dembélé, whose long-range strike clipped the left post on its way in.

From then on, the hosts grew in confidence and controlled proceedings, though further goals proved elusive before the break.

Nuno Mendes and Désiré Doué both went close either side of half-time, while Lille struggled to carve out clear chances.

Just after the hour mark, Dembélé delivered a moment of pure class to ease any lingering tension. Picked out by Doué inside the box, he danced past three defenders and delicately lifted the ball over Berke Özer, dropping it just under the bar.

Barcola added the final flourish in the 93rd minute, capitalising on a lapse from Aïssa Mandi, stealing possession inside the area and calmly finishing into the corner.

Although PSG started shakily, their superior quality told. They generated 1.32 expected goals from 13 shots, compared to Lille’s 0.78 from seven efforts, with both of Dembélé’s strikes coming from low-probability chances, underlining their difficulty.

Dembélé’s goals also highlighted his versatility in front of goal. Of his 41 Ligue 1 goals, 21 have been scored with his right foot and 18 with his left, with only two headers to his name.

Doué was influential throughout, not only providing an assist but also leading the match for shots (four), crosses (five), completed dribbles (five), and duels won (seven), rounding off an impressive all-round display.
