An Ogun State Magistrate Court sitting in Sagamu has adjourned the trial of Adeniyi Kayode, the driver involved in the fatal road accident that claimed the lives of two close associates of Nigerian-born boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, to February 25, 2026.
The adjournment followed an application by the prosecution during Tuesday’s court sitting. Prosecuting counsel, Richard Nigiwe, informed the court that although the prosecution listed four witnesses, only three were present.
He explained that additional time was required to enable the duplication of the case file and its submission to the Ogun State Attorney General through the Department of Public Prosecution for legal advice.
“We need to duplicate the case file and forward it to the Attorney General’s office through the DPP for guidance,” Nigiwe told the court.
Counsel to the defendant, Olalekan Abiodun, opposed the request, arguing that the prosecution had sufficient time to complete the process before the hearing date.
However, the presiding magistrate ruled that the adjournment was necessary in the interest of justice and directed the prosecution to complete and forward the case file accordingly. The matter was subsequently adjourned to February 25, 2026.
Following the court session, the defence counsel expressed agreement with the court’s decision, while the prosecuting counsel declined to comment.
The case arises from a road crash that occurred on December 29, 2025, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
A Lexus SUV driven by Kayode reportedly collided with a stationary truck, resulting in the deaths of Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami. Anthony Joshua and the driver sustained minor injuries in the accident.
Kayode was arraigned on four counts, including dangerous and negligent driving, as well as driving without a valid licence.
He was initially remanded in custody on January 2, 2026, before being granted bail in the sum of ₦5 million with two sureties.
The Ogun State Police Command had earlier stated that the defendant would remain in custody pending the fulfilment of his bail conditions.
Meanwhile, funeral prayers for Ayodele and Ghami were held on January 4 at the London Central Mosque. Before the repatriation of their remains, Joshua and his mother paid tribute to the deceased at a funeral home in Lagos.
The court adjourned the matter to allow the prosecution to conclude the necessary legal procedures ahead of the next hearing.
