Como marked their first-ever appearance in the UEFA Champions League in emphatic fashion, defeating RB Leipzig 4-1 in their opening league-phase fixture at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia on Thursday.
Martin Baturina put the Italian side ahead in the 15th minute before Anastasios Douvikas doubled their advantage 23 minutes later.
Assane Diao added a third shortly after the restart, while Andrija Maksimovic pulled one back for Leipzig before Máximo Perrone completed Como’s impressive victory in stoppage time.
The hosts made a bright start and almost opened the scoring earlier, with Leipzig goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt producing two saves to deny Douvikas and Nico Paz.
Baturina eventually broke the deadlock after capitalising on a loose ball inside the visitors’ area and finishing from close range.
Leipzig threatened to respond, but Como goalkeeper Jean Butez kept out efforts from Antonio Nusa and Andrija Maksimovic as the visitors struggled to turn their chances into goals.
Como extended their lead in the 38th minute when Baturina sent Douvikas through from inside his own half.
The forward held off Castello Lukeba before firing past Vandevoordt to make it 2-0.
Diao made it 3-0 nine minutes into the second half after being played through by Paz.
The forward chose to shoot rather than cross and found the net from a difficult angle to put Como firmly in control.
Leipzig reduced the deficit in the 58th minute when Christopher Nkunku intercepted a misplaced pass from Paz before setting up Maksimovic, who unleashed a powerful effort from the edge of the box.
The German side pushed for another goal but Como remained dangerous on the counter.
In the fourth minute of stoppage time, Paz combined with substitute Moise Kean before releasing Perrone, who calmly rounded the advancing goalkeeper and swept the ball home to seal a memorable 4-1 win.
