Burna Boy presents Socrates Award to Saka at Ballon d’Or ceremony

Nigerian music star, Burna Boy, presented Arsenal forward, Bukayo Saka with the 2026 Socrates Award at the Ballon d’Or ceremony on Monday.

The award recognises footballers who use their fame, resources and influence to support humanitarian initiatives and improve the lives of people in their communities.

Before presenting the honour to Saka, Burna Boy spoke about his football academy in Nigeria, explaining that he established the initiative several years ago to contribute to the development of football in his home country.

The singer expressed hope that his efforts would help nurture Nigerian talents capable of earning recognition on the global stage.

“Something I started a few years ago, just to support the football culture back home. Hopefully, inshallah, one day I’ll come back here to see one of my people getting an award in Ballon d’Or,” he said.

Saka received the award in recognition of his charitable activities through BigShoe, an organisation that provides medical assistance to children in need.

Through his involvement with the organisation, the England international has helped children gain access to essential medical treatment, including operations to restore their sight.

Established in 2022 by France Football in partnership with Peace and Sport, the Socrates Award is named after the late Brazilian football legend Sócrates, who was renowned for his contributions beyond the football pitch.

Previous recipients include Senegalese forward Sadio Mané, Brazilian winger Vinícius Júnior and Spanish footballer Jenni Hermoso.

The 2025 award was presented to the Xana Foundation, founded by Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique in memory of his daughter.

Burna Boy’s appearance at the ceremony highlighted the connection between music, football and charitable initiatives, while Saka’s recognition underscored the role footballers can play in supporting vulnerable communities.
