Buendia’s goal hands Aston Villa 2-1 comeback win over Tottenham

Emiliano Buendia came off the bench to produce a moment of brilliance, firing Aston Villa to a 2-1 comeback victory over Tottenham Hotspur at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday.

Unai Emery’s side showed grit and composure after falling behind early, with Buendia curling home a superb late winner to seal all three points.

Rodrigo Bentancur had given Spurs the perfect start in the fifth minute, guiding in his first Premier League goal of 2025.

The Uruguayan’s effort deflected slightly off Amadou Onana after Joao Palhinha neatly cushioned Mohammed Kudus’ deep delivery into his path.

Villa, however, clawed their way back before the interval. Morgan Rogers found space on the edge of the box and rifled a 20-yard strike beyond Guglielmo Vicario to register his first Premier League goal of the season.

Tottenham pushed hard after the restart but failed to make their pressure count, and were punished when Buendia curled in beautifully from the edge of the area to complete the turnaround.

Brennan Johnson squandered a late chance in stoppage time, blazing over as Villa held firm to climb to 10th on 12 points, now just two behind Spurs.

For Thomas Frank’s men, it was another frustrating home outing. Tottenham have now dropped 19 points from winning positions at home since the start of last season, the worst record in the Premier League and have lost five such matches in that period, also a league high.

This defeat leaves Spurs with just four points from their opening four home games, marking their poorest home start to a league campaign since 2008–09.

Ironically, Frank’s teams continue to start fast, no side has scored more Premier League goals in the opening five minutes since last season (six, including one with Spurs), but once again, early promise gave way to late disappointment as Villa celebrated their first away league win after going behind in exactly a year.
