A 40-year-old British woman, Claire Chadwick, has died alongside her unborn daughter in Nigeria after developing sepsis following the loss of her baby in the womb.
Chadwick, who was 37 weeks pregnant, reportedly suffered septic shock after her unborn child died.
Her death has left her family in the United Kingdom devastated, with relatives now working to bring her remains home for burial.
According to reports, Chadwick, who was from Cardiff, Wales, had relocated to Nigeria in recent years to begin a new life with her husband, Ibrahim.
The couple built an online following through videos shared on TikTok and Instagram, where they documented their relationship, religious faith and food-related challenges.
Her sister, Shannon Chadwick, announced the tragedy in a fundraising appeal, saying the family’s immediate priority was to bring Claire back to the UK so she could be laid to rest alongside her unborn daughter.
“It is with a heavy heart that our family shares the sudden passing of our sister Claire. She was 37 weeks pregnant, and tragically, we lost her precious baby girl as well,” Shannon wrote.
The family launched a GoFundMe campaign with a target of £10,000 to cover the legal and logistical expenses involved in repatriating her remains from Nigeria to the UK.
Shannon said the unexpected international arrangements had proved difficult for the grieving family to manage.
The appeal has since surpassed its initial target.
Chadwick, described by her family as funny and strong-minded, leaves behind a 19-year-old son in Wales, her husband and other relatives.
Her sister said the family wanted her and her baby to be returned home and laid to rest with dignity, surrounded by loved ones.
Sepsis is a life-threatening medical condition that occurs when the body’s response to an infection causes damage to its own tissues and organs.
Maternal sepsis can develop during pregnancy, childbirth or after delivery and remains a major cause of maternal deaths, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.
Early recognition and prompt medical treatment are critical to preventing complications.
