Bournemouth coach, Andoni Iraola, has praised Arsenal after they were confirmed as Premier League champions, saying the Gunners “finally have what they deserve” following years of near misses.
Arsenal, managed by Mikel Arteta, clinched their first league title in 22 years after a dominant campaign that saw them finish ahead of Manchester City with a game to spare.
The triumph comes after three straight seasons of finishing second under Arteta’s leadership.
Their title win was effectively secured after a crucial victory over Burnley on Monday night, before the crown was officially confirmed less than 24 hours later when Manchester City failed to take maximum points against Bournemouth.
Iraola, who shares a close personal relationship with Arteta, was full of praise for the Arsenal boss and also acknowledged former Cherries goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, who spent time at Bournemouth last season.
“I have to congratulate Mikel and also Arsenal, and Kepa [Arrizabalaga] who was here with us last season,” the Spaniard told reporters (via The Standard).
“I am very happy for them, I think they have done such a special job in the past seasons and it was a little bit unfair they were always there, close, but I think finally they have what they deserve.
“I am very happy from that side and we were really trying to get Europe and focusing on Bournemouth, but now I think also we have to congratulate Mikel and all of his team.”
While celebrations erupted across north London, Bournemouth also had reason to be satisfied after securing European qualification for the first time in their history.
Iraola reflected on that achievement and hinted at bigger ambitions ahead for his side.
“We have a special group of players. They are consistent and always there. Right now there is nothing about my future in my head, I just want to celebrate and push it.
“We have Europa League, next let’s maximise our options. Can we take the last Champions League spot?
“I still don’t know where I will go but I’m in no rush, let’s finish on a high.”
