The Ogun State Police Command has revealed that the death of 22-year-old Afrofuji singer, Afeez Adesina, popularly known as Destiny Boy, was caused by the intake of harmful substances, following the outcome of an autopsy.
According to Daily Trust, the police disclosed that the autopsy, carried out by the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department, found that the singer died from aspiration pneumonitis triggered by toxic levels of tramadol and methamphetamine in his system.
Speaking on the findings, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Babaseyi Oluseyi, confirmed that investigations were ongoing and that a suspect had already been taken into custody.
“The autopsy result indicates that the deceased ingested substances that led to aspiration pneumonitis,” Oluseyi said.
“We have made an arrest in connection with the case, and further investigations are in progress to determine the circumstances surrounding his death.”
Destiny Boy passed away on January 17, 2026, in an incident that generated widespread reactions, particularly on social media, where videos showing his body being moved to a mortuary fueled speculation about the cause of death.
Amid the uncertainty that followed his passing, an associate of the late singer had suggested that he had been dealing with a private health condition.
“Destiny was nursing a health issue in his body before he died. We tried for him, but he didn’t make it,” the associate said in a video circulated online.
His mother, identified as Saida, also spoke about her son’s health struggles, noting that the family had sought both medical and traditional interventions for a long-standing illness linked to seizures.
“We did everything we could, both medically and traditionally, because of his condition,” she said.
The late singer rose to fame in 2019 after his Fuji-style rendition of If by Davido went viral. He went on to build a following with covers of songs by notable Nigerian artistes, including Tekno, 2Baba, 9ice, and Small Doctor.
He also released original tracks such as “Lamba,” “One Transaction,” “Gbese,” “Billion Dollar,” “Mio Gbonkankan,” and “Lowkey,” which further cemented his place in the Afrofuji music scene.
Destiny Boy is survived by his partner, Iremide, and their child, born in November 2024.
