Former Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar, has warned supporters of opposition leaders against exchanging insults, stressing that such attacks ultimately benefit the All Progressives Congress.
In a post on X on Tuesday, Atiku emphasized that anyone who directs insults at Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate, or at himself, is acting against the interests of the coalition, the African Democratic Congress and Nigerians at large.
He likened the discord among ADC supporters to a “civil war” that only serves to strengthen the APC, whom he described as “urban bandits” determined to uphold the “satanic status quo.”
Atiku made the remarks in response to an X post by Novie Everest, who criticized his supporters for insulting Obi while expecting Atiku to be immune from criticism.
“Atiku’s people want to insult Peter Obi without Atiku getting the heat back. Maybe they feel Atiku deserves respect and Peter Obi does not,” the user wrote.
In reply, Atiku stressed the importance of unity among opposition backers. “Dear Everest, anyone who insults Obi or Atiku does not mean well for the leaders, the coalition ADC and for Nigeria and Nigerians.
‘’The only people who benefit from such a civil war are the APC urban bandits who want to maintain the satanic status quo. We are better together,” Abubakar cautioned.
Both Atiku and Obi are part of the ADC, a coalition of opposition parties seeking to unseat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election.
Supporters of the two politicians have often clashed over who should assume the coalition’s presidential ticket and vice-presidential slot, with some of Obi’s backers threatening to withdraw support if he were to accept the vice-presidential role.
