Atalanta advance to UCL play-offs despite final-day loss to Saint-Gilloise

Atalanta secured a place in the Champions League play-offs, finishing 15th in their group, despite a 1-0 defeat to Union Saint-Gilloise in their final league match.

The Italian side ended the group stage with 13 points from eight games, edging out 17th-placed Borussia Dortmund by two points after the Germans fell to Inter Milan.

Union Saint-Gilloise, meanwhile, will bow out of the competition, finishing 27th on goal difference. They were level on nine points with Bodo/Glimt and Benfica, who occupied 23rd and 24th positions, respectively.

The Belgian side had started the day in 31st place but looked determined from the first whistle, with Austrian winger Raul Florucz troubling the Atalanta backline early on.

Atalanta gradually found their rhythm as the half progressed but could not convert their chances.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 70th minute when Israel winger Anan Khalaili struck a spectacular volley from Anouar Ait El Hadj’s free-kick, handing Union the victory.
