Mikel Merino and Bukayo Saka struck the decisive blows as Arsenal maintained their grip on the Premier League title chase with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Brentford at the Emirates Stadium.
Unlike the previous day’s wild nine-goal thriller between Manchester City and Fulham, this was a composed and professional Arsenal display, extending their unbeaten streak to 18 matches across all competitions.
The win also preserved their flawless run at home, eight straight triumphs — and restored their five-point cushion at the top.
With a demanding schedule that recently saw Arsenal face Tottenham, Bayern Munich, and Chelsea, Mikel Arteta opted to rotate his squad. Saka, Jurriën Timber, and Eberechi Eze were handed rests, and the fresh legs paid off early.
Just 11 minutes in, returning winger Noni Madueke combined neatly with Ben White, making his first league start since the opening day.
White whipped in a superb cross which Merino powered into the net, his second goal in as many matches and fourth since stepping up to cover as a makeshift striker following Viktor Gyökeres’ injury.
Madueke came close moments later, forcing a save from Caoimhín Kelleher, as Arsenal dominated early proceedings. But Raya, in goal against his former club, had to produce a stunning fingertip save to divert Kevin Schade’s header onto the bar, preventing Brentford from equalising against the run of play.
Arsenal continued to threaten, though a late first-half setback occurred when centre-back Cristhian Mosquera joined fellow injured defenders Gabriel Magalhães and William Saliba on the sidelines.
Brentford manager Keith Andrews looked to spark a turnaround with a triple change on the hour mark, including the introduction of 10-goal striker Igor Thiago and midfielders Jordan Henderson and Mikkel Damsgaard. Arteta responded by turning to Saka and Eze.
Kelleher remained busy, denying Riccardo Calafiori and pulling off a superb stop from Declan Rice before the England midfielder made way for Gyökeres in the closing stages, allowing Merino to return to midfield duties.
Arsenal’s persistence was rewarded in added time. Saka finally got his name on the scoresheet, his effort taking a slight touch off Kelleher but still looping over the line to seal the result.
A composed performance, another clean sheet, and three vital points, the Gunners march on.
