The Defence Headquarters has launched an investigation into an incident involving personnel of the Guards Brigade that led to the death of a corps member during an alleged crossfire with armed robbers in Abuja.
The Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Michael Onoja, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and assured that any personnel found culpable would be held accountable and prosecuted according to the law.
The military says the probe is aimed at ensuring transparency, discipline, and justice in the handling of the incident.
“Basically, we can see that there is a gap in both narratives. While the soldiers believed that they were chasing armed robbers and there was a crossfire, the family now insist that was not true. We are currently engaging with the family.
On our part, we’re trying to conduct an internal verification to see, within those gaps, which one is the most likely that occurred.
“And I can assure you that whoever is found culpable and acted beyond his mandate will be held accountable and at the appropriate time we will convey it to the Nigerian public, Onoja stressed.
