The All Progressives Congress has responded to the Peoples Democratic Party, labeling it as an “expired political party” with no potential to be discredited.
The ruling party’s reaction follows PDP’s claims that it was privy to a supposed scheme orchestrated by the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, to manipulate the media in a smear campaign against former Akwa Ibom Governor, Udom Emmanuel. PDP accused Akpabio of attempting to discredit the party by circulating falsehoods and misrepresentations.
In a statement issued by Felix Morka, the APC’s National Publicity Secretary, the ruling party dismissed the PDP’s allegations as comical. The APC argued that the PDP had already stripped itself of purpose and relevance to the extent that it could no longer be discredited, no matter the effort. The party challenged the PDP to focus on finding a candidate for the 2025 Anambra State governorship election rather than engaging in unfounded accusations.
“The PDP has done a fantastic job of stripping itself bare of purpose and prestige, and needs no help from anyone, certainly not in the calibre of the President of the Senate and Chairman of the National Assembly,” Morka’s statement read. He further emphasized that the PDP failed to provide any evidence to support its claims and clarified that Akpabio had no involvement in any alleged smear campaign against Emmanuel.
The APC also defended the role of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), reiterating that both agencies have the statutory authority to investigate corruption cases. Morka stated, “If Udom has been invited by the agencies, he should quietly go and answer to the allegations,” asserting that the matter should not be politicized by the PDP.
The statement concluded by urging Udom Emmanuel and the PDP to focus on clearing his name rather than attempting to deflect attention from the investigation. Morka also added, “You would think that decrepit PDP would keep itself usefully occupied in search of therapy for its self-inflicted paralysis.” He further emphasized that Senator Akpabio remains focused on supporting the reform agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
