APC extends Ekiti, Osun caretaker committees’ tenure by six months

The All Progressives Congress has approved a six-month extension of the tenure of its caretaker committee executives in Ekiti State and Osun State.

The decision was reached during the party’s 8th National Convention held on Friday, where delegates ratified the extension to maintain administrative stability in the affected states ahead of upcoming governorship activities.

Presenting the motion, Barau Jibrin explained that the tenure of the caretaker committees at ward, local government, and state levels was due to lapse at the end of March 2026.

He, however, noted that the current political climate made it impractical to organise fresh congresses at this time.

“It is in the best interest of the party to extend the tenure of the caretaker committees to allow for proper coordination and adequate preparation for forthcoming congresses,” Jibrin said.

The motion received support from Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, and was subsequently approved by delegates at the convention.

In another development, the convention dissolved the party’s National Working Committee, a move aimed at paving the way for the emergence of new national officers.

The motion for dissolution was moved by the party’s National Legal Adviser, Abdulkarim Kana, who cited provisions of the party’s constitution, and was seconded by Deputy National Secretary, Abdulkarim Oluopolekana.

Also at the convention, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, proposed the adoption of consensus as the mode of electing new national officers.

“The adoption of a clear method of election will ensure that the process reflects the collective will of party members,” Abbas stated.

The motion was seconded by Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani.

Similarly, Senate President Godswill Akpabio moved a motion for the ratification of previously conducted ward, local government, state, and zonal congresses across the country, noting that they complied with relevant electoral guidelines.
