The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company has restored power supply to the Federal Capital Territory Water Board after widespread complaints of water shortages across Abuja, but warned that the agency must settle its electricity debt or face another disconnection.
In a statement on Saturday, AEDC said the reconnection was approved on humanitarian grounds, given the essential nature of water services.
“The Acting Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Chijioke Okwuokenye, directed the immediate restoration of supply to enable the prompt resumption of water distribution in the FCT,” the company said.
The power firm explained that the Water Board had accumulated electricity arrears for over a year, despite several engagements and reminders.
“Our action followed prolonged non-payment and the build-up of outstanding obligations by the Water Board, in line with regulatory provisions,” AEDC stated.
However, it stressed that the reconnection was conditional.
“We have issued the FCT Water Board a two-week timeline to present and begin implementing a credible repayment plan. Failure to comply will leave us with no option but to reapply service disconnection,” the statement added.
AEDC noted that the decision reflected its concern for public health and community welfare, but maintained that disconnection remained a lawful measure of last resort.
“This intervention underscores our commitment to the communities we serve and to the protection of essential services, particularly where public safety is involved,” the company said.
The temporary power restoration is expected to ease water shortages in many parts of Abuja, while attention shifts to whether the Water Board will meet the repayment conditions.
