Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has announced plans to introduce an electric vehicle public transport system, tagged Abia Green Shuttle Service, before the end of the year.
The initiative, according to the state government, is designed to modernise transportation, promote environmental sustainability, and position Abia as a leader in clean energy mobility in Nigeria.
In a statement issued on Saturday by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, the project is part of Governor Otti’s broader vision for a modern, eco-friendly public transportation system that aligns with global standards and Nigeria’s climate action goals.
“The Abia Green Shuttle Service is part of Governor Otti’s futuristic vision for a sustainable transport network that embraces cleaner energy sources and reduces reliance on fossil fuels,” Ukoha stated.
He disclosed that the state has procured 100 electric buses to operate in major cities, including Aba, Umuahia, and Ohafia, with the first batch of 20 buses expected to become operational before the end of 2025.
“The first set of 20 electric buses, along with 10 charging stations equipped with solutions for persons with disabilities, will hit the roads before year-end,” Ukoha revealed. “Another batch of 20 buses and 10 additional charging points will arrive early next year.”
According to him, the government is also constructing modern bus terminals and designated stops in Aba and Umuahia to improve efficiency, safety, and commuter comfort.
“The project reflects the administration’s determination to embrace innovation, reduce emissions, and improve the quality of life for residents,” Ukoha added.
He further explained that the electric transport system would be powered partly by renewable energy to lessen dependence on the national grid.
“The sustainable transport initiative will rely on solar energy and battery storage systems to ensure consistent power supply,” he said. “This approach will not only protect the environment but also create jobs and stimulate the local economy.”
Highlighting the expected benefits of the project, Ukoha noted that it would enhance road safety, reduce accidents, and boost economic activity across the state.
“This initiative will enhance road safety through designated stops, create employment opportunities, and support economic growth,” he emphasized.
Describing the project as a milestone in the state’s development plan, Ukoha said it demonstrates Governor Otti’s commitment to modernizing public transport while prioritizing sustainability.
“Governor Otti’s plan for a sustainable transport system is comprehensive and forward-thinking. The green shuttle project shows the government’s dedication to building a cleaner, safer, and more efficient transport system for Abia residents,” he said.
