Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has commended the peaceful conduct of local government elections held across the state’s 44 local government areas.
Speaking to reporters after casting his vote in Gwale, the governor expressed gratitude to electoral commission chairmen from other states who oversaw the elections.
Yusuf characterized the elections, conducted in 484 wards, as the most transparent in Kano’s history, according to Daily Trust.
He assured that those elected would prioritize the interests of the people and emphasized his administration’s commitment to good governance.
The governor also praised the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission for facilitating “free and fair elections.” He stressed the importance of allowing citizens to exercise their voting rights without impunity.
Addressing the judiciary, he urged neutrality in electoral matters, warning against partisanship. He highlighted that despite his party’s position in government, the people of Kano are peaceful but can respond if provoked.
Yusuf called on the opposition to accept electoral outcomes gracefully, reinforcing his party’s significant voter support in the elections.
He said: “When it comes to election, there shouldn’t be any impunity and we should ensure that people are allowed to vote their mandate
“I am appealing to the judiciary to continue being neutral when it comes to Elections. It is not so good for our judiciary to be partisan even though the Kano state government is the only Government which came into office under the platform of NNPP, we shouldn’t be intimidated, people of Kano are peace loving people but if they are pushed to the wall they can react.
“We’ve seen what happened in Rivers, so we took proactive measures in ensuring that similar scenario does not happen in Kano.
“I want to appeal to the opposition to always accept defeat as we have upper hand in terms of voters’ support.”
