Rhodes-Vivour, Abia deputy gov attend Lagos-Abia Day

The Lagos State governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, on Saturday joined the Deputy Governor of Abia State and other prominent personalities at the 2026 Abia Day Celebration in Lagos, organised to raise funds for the construction of a town hall for Abia indigenes resident in the state.

Rhodes-Vivour disclosed his participation in a post on his X account, @GRVlagos, where he said the gathering brought together illustrious sons of Abia State, including the deputy governor, the Eze Aro of Arochukwu, Mazi Samuel Ohuabunwa, OFR, and Dr Ogah, among others.

“Earlier today in the company of illustrious sons such as the Deputy Governor of Abia State, Eze Aro of Arochukwu, Mazi Samuel Ohuabunwa OFR, Dr Ogah, amongst several others, gathered in the spirit of philanthropy,” he wrote.

He also expressed appreciation to those who contributed towards the initiative, praying for divine replenishment of their resources.

“May God replenish the pockets of the many that gave towards this great cause,” Rhodes-Vivour added.

The event was organised by the Abia State Town Unions Association, Lagos State, which is mobilising resources for the construction of a befitting town hall and permanent headquarters to serve as a common meeting place for Abians living in Lagos.

The President-General of the association, Mazi Chuks Nwosu, had said the project was designed to promote unity, cultural identity and the collective welfare of Abia indigenes in Lagos.

He described the proposed facility as an investment in the future of the community.

According to Nwosu, ASTUA has expanded its membership from 23 active communities to 55 registered communities since he assumed office earlier in 2026.

The association represents recognised town unions and community development groups drawn from the 17 local government areas of Abia State.

The Eze Aro IX of Arochukwu Kingdom, His Eminence, Engr Dr Eberechukwu Kanu Oji, was announced as the Royal Father of the Day ahead of the celebration, which was expected to attract traditional rulers, political office holders, business leaders and other prominent indigenes.

Rhodes-Vivour’s attendance comes as he continues to consolidate his political position in Lagos ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

The architect and politician contested the 2023 governorship election under the Labour Party, where he emerged as a prominent opposition figure, particularly among young voters.

He later joined the African Democratic Congress as part of efforts to build a broader opposition coalition against the ruling All Progressives Congress in Lagos.

His political activities have increasingly focused on grassroots mobilisation, community engagement and criticism of government policies, including urban demolitions and issues affecting residents.

The former Labour Party candidate has maintained his ambition to govern Lagos, arguing that the state requires a more inclusive approach to governance that prioritises the welfare of residents.
