Five leading Nigerian media organisations under the Nigeria Debate Consortium will host a Lagos State governorship debate on Sunday, November 8, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The debate, scheduled for 7pm, will hold at The Hub by IALA, House of His Glory, Plot 18, Providence Road, beside Keystone Bank, Marwa, Lekki, Lagos.
It is expected to bring together governorship candidates from various political parties to outline their programmes, explain their policy positions and answer questions on issues affecting residents of the state.
The development was announced in a statement titled ‘Lagos 2026: Nigeria Debate Consortium Sets November 8 for Governorship Debate,’ made available to PUNCH Online on Sunday.
The Nigeria Debate Consortium comprises Channels Television, TVC News, the PUNCH, TheCable and Vanguard Newspaper.
The partnership aims to promote democratic participation, electoral accountability and informed public discussions through credible and non-partisan debates.
According to the organisers, the Lagos engagement will be the first in a series of debates planned for selected battleground states ahead of the 2027 elections. The series will conclude with a presidential debate and town hall.
“The Nigeria Debate Consortium, comprising Channels Television, TVC News, Punch Newspaper, The Cable and Vanguard Newspaper, opens the series of debates for the 2027 election season with the Lagos governorship debate and will end with the presidential debate/townhall.
“It is the first in the series of debates in some battleground states of Nigeria ahead of the 2027 elections. The debate will be held on Sunday, November 8, at 7:00 p.m. at The Hub by IALA, House of His Glory, Plot 18, Providence Road, beside Keystone Bank, Marwa, Lekki, Lagos State.
“The initiative will provide a credible, non-partisan platform for participating governorship candidates to present their agendas, defend their policy choices and respond to questions on the issues that matter most to Lagos residents.
“From transportation and infrastructure to security, housing, education, healthcare, job creation and economic growth, the debate will put the candidates’ ideas, priorities and readiness to govern under public scrutiny,” the statement partly read.
The organisers said the exercise was designed to help voters assess the candidates beyond campaign promises and understand their proposed solutions to the state’s challenges.
Channels Television said the debate reflected the media’s responsibility to educate voters and promote accountability in the electoral process.
“Voters deserve more than campaign promises; they deserve clear answers, credible plans and an opportunity to assess those seeking their mandate. This debate will place issues, ideas and the future of Lagos at the centre of the electoral conversation. Our responsibility is to help citizens make informed choices based on what candidates propose and how convincingly they demonstrate their capacity to deliver,” the media outlet stated.
Similarly, TVC News highlighted the importance of allowing candidates to explain the practical details of their campaign promises.
“A governorship debate is an opportunity for candidates to move beyond political rhetoric and demonstrate the substance of their vision for Lagos.
Citizens need to understand not only what candidates promise, but how they intend to deliver.
“By creating a fair platform for this engagement, we are helping to promote accountability and a more informed electorate.”
The consortium assured participating candidates of equal treatment, including identical rules, speaking durations and moderation standards.
It added that experienced journalists would moderate the session in line with established professional standards, with neutrality, fairness, equal opportunity and editorial independence guiding the proceedings.
The debate will also be transmitted to national and online audiences through the platforms of the participating media organisations.
The organisers called on Lagos residents, particularly eligible voters, young people, civil society organisations, professional associations and members of the business community, to participate in the electoral engagement.
Among the expected participants are Lagos State Deputy Governor and All Progressives Congress governorship candidate, Obafemi Hamzat; African Democratic Congress candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour; and Nigeria Democratic Congress candidate, Funso Doherty.
Hamzat, in a July 2026 interview with the PUNCH, outlined plans to expand infrastructure, improve security through the establishment of state police, tackle flooding, address housing challenges and improve waste management.
Rhodes-Vivour, on his part, has promised to deliver 100,000 housing units during his first term if elected, alongside measures to provide affordable transportation and enable residents to report alleged intimidation by police officers and political thugs.
Doherty also pledged on October 1, 2026, to make education and healthcare free and accessible within his first 100 days in office if elected governor.
