The President of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, has disclosed that he is taking English language lessons to improve his spoken communication.
Akinsanya made this known on Tuesday while addressing Nollywood actor Adams Kehinde, popularly known as Lege Miami, and other attendees at a rally organised to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.
Speaking in Yoruba, the transport union leader admitted that neither he nor Lege Miami spoke English fluently, revealing that he had enrolled for lessons to improve his proficiency in the language.
He also explained that despite travelling frequently outside Nigeria, he had yet to become fluent in English.
“Neither of us speaks English fluently, so I am taking classes to improve. I travel around the world. I am a citizen of America.
“When I get to immigration and they ask how many weeks I want to stay, I tell them no, this is my home. I am a US citizen; I am going home,” he said.
MC Oluomo also highlighted the educational and professional accomplishments of his children, noting that they had established careers in different fields in the United States.
“My children can speak better than me. My children in the US are nurses, a doctor and an engineer,” he said.
According to him, he sometimes hands over the microphone to his children when he struggles to communicate effectively in English during public engagements.
“If I get somewhere and cannot speak English well, I will give the microphone to one of my children,” he said.
His latest remarks come amid previous public criticism over his spoken English, particularly following a viral video in April 2025 in which he pronounced the word “kudos” as “kundusi” while praising members of the union in Abuja.
The incident attracted widespread reactions on social media, prompting Akinsanya to acknowledge his limitations in speaking English while maintaining that language proficiency was not a measure of personal achievement.
At the time, he dismissed the emphasis on his English-speaking ability, saying, “Grammar won’t finish Nigeria, I might not understand the English language, but I understand Yoruba.”
He also challenged his critics to measure their achievements against those of his children, whom he described as highly educated and citizens of the United States and the United Kingdom.
“I trained my children properly with money. My children are citizens of America and the United Kingdom. I worked hard to get there,” he said in the earlier video.
