Bayern Munich secured a 2-0 victory over Atletico Madrid in Spain on Tuesday, with second-half goals from Lennart Karl and Konrad Laimer handing the German champions all three points in their UEFA Champions League fourth-round encounter.
The visitors started the encounter at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano with both sides engaging in a closely contested first half.
Despite their efforts, neither team managed to break the deadlock before the interval.
Bayern eventually took the lead in the 54th minute when Karl found the back of the net to put the visitors ahead.
The goal gave the German side the advantage as Atletico sought to respond in front of their home supporters.
Laimer doubled Bayern’s lead in the 74th minute, putting the visitors in a commanding position.
His strike further strengthened Bayern’s control of the contest and left Atletico with a difficult task.
Atletico manager Diego Simeone attempted to change the course of the match by introducing Koke, Lee Kang-in and Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman around the hour mark.
Julian Alvarez and Alexander Sorloth were among those substituted, but the changes failed to produce the desired result.
Bayern maintained their advantage until the final whistle, completing an impressive away victory.
The visitors also dominated the statistics, recording 59 per cent possession, 639 completed passes and five shots on target, compared with Atletico’s 41 per cent possession, 450 passes and three shots on target.
The result earned Bayern three valuable points in the Champions League campaign, while Atletico were left to reflect on a disappointing home defeat.
