Sporting CP boosted their UEFA Champions League campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk at Stamford Bridge in London on Tuesday.

Issa Doumbia scored the decisive goal in the 59th minute, firing a right-footed effort into the bottom corner to hand the Portuguese side all three points in a closely contested encounter.

Shakhtar dominated possession and created several opportunities in search of an equaliser, but Sporting’s disciplined defence frustrated the Ukrainian side throughout the game.

The hosts finished with 14 shots against Sporting’s 11 and registered four efforts on target.

They also struck the woodwork once but failed to convert their chances, including three clear opportunities.

Shakhtar’s Kauã Elias was particularly wasteful in front of goal, missing two major chances despite producing five attempts.

Alisson Santana also came close to scoring but saw his effort hit the woodwork.

Sporting goalkeeper Rui Silva played a crucial role in preserving the visitors’ advantage, making three saves as Shakhtar increased the pressure in the second half.

Sporting’s defensive organisation proved decisive, with Eduardo Quaresma delivering an impressive performance at the back.

He completed 40 passes, won six duels and made four clearances to help his side withstand the late pressure.

The victory ensured Sporting left London with maximum points, while Shakhtar were left to rue their missed opportunities despite creating enough chances to earn something from the encounter.
