Turkey to grant Salah, family citizenship, confer state honour – Report

None

Egyptian football star, Mohamed Salah, is reportedly set to receive Turkish citizenship alongside his wife and three children, with plans also underway to honour him with a prestigious state medal following his move to Turkish club Trabzonspor.

The proposed citizenship reportedly follows the 34-year-old forward’s arrival at Trabzonspor, where his performances and growing popularity have attracted considerable attention in Türkiye.

Egyptian journalist Mohamed Al-Kaoud, who works with the BBC, made the claims in a Facebook post, although Turkish authorities have yet to officially confirm the development.

“I have learned that Mohamed Salah will receive Turkish citizenship, in addition to his wife and three children,” Al-Kaoud wrote.

He further claimed that the Egyptian international would receive the State Medal for Distinguished Service at a grand ceremony in recognition of his contributions to the country’s sporting and tourism sectors.

According to the reports, the proposed ceremony would also feature a high-level honour for the forward, who has reportedly made a significant impact in Türkiye since joining Trabzonspor at the beginning of the 2026/27 season.

Salah joined the Turkish side in August 2026 after bringing his nine-year spell at Liverpool to an end.

He signed a two-year contract with Trabzonspor, having established himself as one of the Premier League’s most influential forwards during his time in England.

He scored 257 goals in 442 appearances for Liverpool, winning two Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League, the FA Cup and two League Cups.

The former Chelsea and AS Roma forward has also enjoyed considerable success with Egypt, becoming one of the country’s most celebrated footballers.

He has won the African Footballer of the Year award twice, in 2017 and 2018.

However, neither the Turkish government nor Trabzonspor has issued an official statement confirming the reported citizenship arrangement or the proposed state honour.
