2027 elections: FRSC bans political escorts, restricts officers to traffic control

The Federal Road Safety Corps has prohibited its personnel from providing escorts for politicians during campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The directive also bars the use of FRSC patrol vehicles and sirens for political engagements and private events, including weddings and funeral processions.

The Zonal Commanding Officer of RS6, ACM Abimbola Owolabi, announced the restrictions on Wednesday during her maiden visit to the Cross River State Command in Calabar.

Owolabi directed officers assigned to campaign venues to concentrate on traffic management and measures to prevent road crashes and congestion.

She warned that patrol vehicles must not be used to lead political convoys or provide security escorts for politicians.

“Patrol vehicles and sirens must not be used for political activities or private engagements, including weddings and funeral processions,” she said

The zonal commander urged personnel to strengthen public awareness campaigns on road safety, noting that sustained education could help reduce crashes and fatalities.

She also cautioned officers against extortion, corruption and other forms of misconduct, stressing the importance of accountability in maintaining public confidence in the corps.

“Misconduct by patrol operators and other personnel undermines public confidence in the corps. Officers must be extremely accountable across operational units,” Owolabi said.

She further advised personnel to exercise caution during enforcement operations and avoid unnecessary confrontations that could result in assaults, injuries or damage to their uniforms.

Owolabi called for professionalism and discretion in dealing with motorists, particularly in tense situations that could escalate into violence.

She also advocated stronger collaboration with private operators to ensure that broken-down vehicles were removed promptly from highways and traffic obstructions cleared.

The FRSC official emphasised the need for timely emergency response, effective rescue operations and intensified patrols to curb road crashes and fatalities.

“I urge FRSC personnel to maintain high standards of service delivery, process official correspondence carefully and ensure requests for operational support are properly documented,” she said.

Owolabi encouraged officers to take advantage of the National Health Insurance Scheme, noting that good health was essential for effective service delivery.

She also appealed to the wives of FRSC personnel under the Road Safety Officers’ Wives Association to support their husbands in carrying out their responsibilities and protecting lives.
