UCL: Isco penalty earns Real Betis 1-0 win over Feyenoord

Real Betis secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Feyenoord in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, with Isco’s second-half penalty proving decisive at the Estadio de La Cartuja.

The Spanish side dominated the attacking statistics but had goalkeeper Tjark Ernst to thank for keeping the scoreline close, as the Feyenoord shot-stopper produced an outstanding performance despite his team’s defeat.

Isco broke the deadlock in the 59th minute, calmly converting from the penalty spot after Jeremiah St. Juste’s foul presented Betis with a golden opportunity to take the lead.

The hosts had created several chances before the breakthrough but struggled to find a way past Ernst, who repeatedly denied their attempts on goal.

Betis finished the encounter with 23 shots, including 10 on target, compared with Feyenoord’s 12 attempts and just two efforts on target.

The home side also recorded a higher expected goals figure of 2.00 against Feyenoord’s 0.79, highlighting their greater attacking threat throughout the contest.

Despite enjoying 53 per cent possession, Feyenoord struggled to turn their control of the ball into clear-cut opportunities, particularly in the final third.

Ernst was the visitors’ standout performer, making nine saves, including six from inside the penalty area.

His efforts prevented Betis from extending their advantage and kept Feyenoord within reach of a possible equaliser.

The goalkeeper’s impressive display earned him an 8.7 rating, making him the highest-rated player in the match.

At the other end, Betis defender Natan delivered a commanding performance, recording nine clearances, four interceptions and three successful tackles.

Midfielder Marc Roca also played an important role in the hosts’ victory, completing 61 of his 68 passes and creating four key chances.

Feyenoord attempted to increase the pressure after the interval, enjoying more possession and completing more passes in the attacking third.

However, they struggled to test Betis goalkeeper Álvaro Valles, who made two saves.

The Dutch side also failed to capitalise on their aerial advantage in the second half, while Betis remained organised defensively to protect their lead.

Despite Feyenoord’s late efforts, the hosts held firm to claim all three points.

The result rewarded Betis for their superior attacking output, while Feyenoord were left to rue their inability to convert possession into meaningful chances.
