Mexico has formally approved the appointment of Reno Omokri as Nigeria’s ambassador to the country, ending months of uncertainty surrounding his diplomatic posting.
Omokri announced the development in a post on X on Tuesday, October 20, saying the Chargé d’Affaires of the Mexican Embassy in Abuja, José Manuel Briseño Flores, had delivered the formal diplomatic approval to Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In the post, Omokri said the Mexican government had accepted his appointment as Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Mexico.
He wrote, “To God be the glory, the Chargé d’affaires of the Embassy of the United Mexican States in Abuja, Mr José Manuel Briseño Flores, today in Abuja delivered the agrément from the Government of the United Mexican States accepting me, Bemigho Reno Omokri, to serve as Ambassador Extraordinaire and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the United Mexican States.”
He added that his diplomatic responsibilities would extend to Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, where he would serve under concurrent accreditation.
President Bola Tinubu nominated Omokri for an ambassadorial position in November 2025 alongside several other nominees, including former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, and former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Mahmood Yakubu.
The Senate confirmed Omokri and the other ambassadorial nominees in December 2025, while Tinubu approved the postings of 65 ambassadors-designate and high commissioners on March 6, 2026.
Omokri was subsequently assigned to Mexico City, but his deployment awaited formal approval from the Mexican government.
In August, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed that Mexico and Japan were among the countries yet to communicate formal acceptance of two outstanding ambassadorial appointments.
The ministry said it was engaging the countries concerned and expressed optimism that the necessary diplomatic clearances would be secured.
Omokri had earlier rejected speculation that Mexico had turned down his appointment.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today in June, he attributed the delay to diplomatic procedures and preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which Mexico is co-hosting with the United States and Canada.
Agrément is the formal consent granted by a host country before a diplomat nominated by another country can assume an ambassadorial position.
Omokri previously served as a media aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan and is known for his political commentary.
