UCL: Slavia Prague hold Fenerbahce to 2-2 draw

Slavia Prague scored in the 90th minute to secure a dramatic 2-2 draw against Fenerbahce in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, recovering from a two-goal deficit at the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium in Istanbul.

The Turkish side looked set to claim their first victory of the competition after establishing an early advantage, but substitute Pavel Kacor struck late to deny the hosts all three points.

Fenerbahce made an impressive start, opening the scoring in the fourth minute through Oguz Aydin.

The winger cut inside from the right before curling a left-footed effort into the top-left corner beyond goalkeeper Jakub Markovic.

The hosts extended their lead seven minutes later when Mason Greenwood finished from inside the penalty area after receiving a pass from Nelson Semedo.

However, Slavia Prague responded in the 15th minute after Matteo Guendouzi gave away possession with a misplaced pass from a goal kick taken by Ederson.

Slavia captain Lukas Provod capitalised on the error, racing forward before calmly beating the Brazilian goalkeeper to reduce the deficit.

Fenerbahce continued to threaten, with Guendouzi shooting narrowly wide in the 28th minute before Aydin hit the side netting nine minutes later.

Vedat Muriqi also came close to restoring the hosts’ two-goal advantage before the break, but Markovic made a save from a tight angle to keep Slavia in contention.

Fenerbahce went into halftime with a 2-1 lead.

The hosts introduced Romelu Lukaku and Dorgeles Nene in the 63rd minute in search of another goal.

The substitutes nearly combined immediately, but Markovic produced an excellent diving save to deny Nene after Lukaku won possession high up the pitch and delivered a cross.

Slavia gradually increased the pressure as the match progressed, forcing Ederson into action in the 80th minute.

Lukaku then missed an opportunity to extend Fenerbahce’s lead two minutes later, firing over the crossbar from a tight angle.

Slavia defender David Zima also tested Ederson with a long-range effort as the visitors pushed for an equaliser.

Their persistence paid off in the final minute of regulation time when Kacor completed the comeback.

Introduced just five minutes earlier, the substitute converted a dangerous cross from Ayaosi on the right to make it 2-2.

The late goal denied Fenerbahce a much-needed victory after their disappointing 6-0 defeat to Aston Villa the previous week.

The draw leaves Fenerbahce with two points from their opening three Champions League matches, while Slavia Prague claimed their first point in the league phase.
