PSV Eindhoven secured a crucial 1-0 victory over FC Porto in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, with Guus Til scoring the decisive goal in the second half at the Estádio do Dragão.
Til found the net in the 57th minute after a well-worked attacking move involving Sergiño Dest, Esmir Bajraktarević and Sven Mijnans, who provided the assist.
The goal proved enough to separate the sides, as PSV held firm against Porto’s attempts to find an equaliser and claimed all three points away from home.
Til makes the difference
PSV’s breakthrough came shortly after the interval when Mijnans delivered a precise pass into space for Til, who controlled the ball before firing a low shot past Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa.
The visitors looked more threatening in attack, creating five big chances compared with Porto’s three.
PSV also struck the woodwork twice, underlining their ability to trouble the hosts throughout the contest.
Despite Porto’s efforts to respond, PSV’s defensive organisation ensured that Til’s goal remained the only one of the match.
PSV dominate possession
The Dutch side controlled much of the game, finishing with 60 per cent possession and completing 530 accurate passes, compared with Porto’s 340.
PSV also recorded 18 shots against Porto’s 14 and made 84 entries into the final third, almost twice the hosts’ total of 43.
Sven Mijnans played an important role in the visitors’ attacking play, creating four key passes and two big chances.
Goalkeeper Matěj Kovář also contributed with three saves to preserve the clean sheet.
Porto fail to convert chances
Porto increased the pressure after the break and registered 10 second-half shots, but their attacking efforts lacked the finishing touch needed to salvage a result.
The Portuguese side finished with four shots on target and an expected-goals figure of 1.40, yet they failed to find a way past Kovář.
Several promising opportunities went unconverted, allowing PSV to maintain their advantage despite the hosts’ late push.
Porto introduced Hwang In-beom, Borja Sainz and André Silva in an attempt to change the game’s momentum, but PSV’s defence remained resolute.
Geertruida shines in defensive display
Lutsharel Geertruida delivered an outstanding performance for PSV, earning a Sofascore rating of 8.2 to be named Player of the Match.
The defender completed 86 of his 93 passes and recorded 99 touches as he helped PSV build attacks and maintain control of possession.
He also made five recoveries, produced a block and cleared a dangerous effort off the goal line, combining his contribution in possession with important defensive interventions.
Geertruida’s performance was central to PSV’s disciplined display as they frustrated Porto and protected their narrow lead until the final whistle.
The victory highlighted PSV’s efficiency in front of goal and defensive resilience, while Porto were left to rue their missed opportunities after failing to turn their attacking pressure into an equaliser.
