UCL: McTominay bags brace as Napoli edge Bodø/Glimt 4-3

Napoli secured a thrilling 4-3 victory over Norwegian side Bodø/Glimt in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, with Scott McTominay scoring twice in an entertaining encounter at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

The hosts made an explosive start when Matteo Politano opened the scoring just 58 seconds into the match, finishing a cross from Leonardo Spinazzola to give Napoli an early advantage.

Bodø/Glimt responded in the 27th minute as Jens Petter Hauge restored parity after receiving a pass from Sondre Fet.

Napoli regained the lead before half-time through McTominay, who converted a pass from Kevin De Bruyne in the 41st minute to put the Italian side ahead 2-1.

The visitors continued to threaten after the restart and drew level again in the 62nd minute when Andreas Helmersen finished off Fet’s precise pass.

McTominay struck for the second time in the 75th minute, rising above the defence to head home Politano’s cross and hand Napoli a 3-2 advantage.

Napoli extended their lead in the 88th minute when Bodø/Glimt defender Odin Luras Bjørtuft inadvertently turned the ball into his own net.

However, the visitors refused to give up and reduced the deficit in the 90th minute, with Fet heading home from a corner to set up a tense finish.

Despite the late pressure, Napoli held on through four minutes of added time to claim all three points in a seven-goal contest.

The victory was powered by McTominay’s clinical finishing, with the Scotland international delivering two decisive goals to help the hosts overcome a determined Bodø/Glimt side.

Although the visitors enjoyed more possession and created several scoring opportunities, Napoli proved more effective at crucial moments.

Bodø/Glimt recorded 57 per cent possession and registered an expected goals figure of 2.66, compared with Napoli’s 1.52.

The Norwegian side also created five big chances against Napoli’s three but could not convert enough of their opportunities.

Napoli, meanwhile, showed greater strength in physical duels and aerial contests, helping them withstand the visitors’ attacking pressure.

The result capped a dramatic European night in Naples, with McTominay’s brace and Napoli’s ability to take advantage of key moments proving decisive.
