UCL: Álvarez rescues point for Atlético Madrid against Stuttgart

Atletico Madrid secured a 1-1 draw against VfB Stuttgart in their UEFA Champions League encounter on Tuesday night, with Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman providing the assist for Julian Alvarez’s equaliser.

The Spanish side endured a difficult evening in Germany, struggling to contain Stuttgart’s attacking threat before being reduced to 10 men in the second half.

Stuttgart dominated the opening period and deservedly took the lead in the 35th minute through Jamie Leweling, capitalising on Atletico’s defensive weaknesses.

Diego Simeone’s side responded immediately after the break, with Lookman setting up Alvarez to score less than two minutes into the second half.

The goal was Alvarez’s first of the season.

However, Atletico’s hopes of securing victory suffered a setback when Morten Hjulmand received a red card following a reckless challenge, forcing the visitors to defend with a numerical disadvantage.

Stuttgart subsequently increased the pressure, creating several opportunities to regain the lead, but goalkeeper Jan Oblak produced a series of impressive saves to keep his team in the contest.

Oblak, who was making his 550th appearance for Atletico, delivered an outstanding performance, particularly in the closing stages when Stuttgart pressed for a winning goal.

Atletico’s defence also held firm under sustained pressure to ensure the visitors left Germany with a point.

Lookman’s
contribution continued his efforts to establish himself as an influential figure in Atletico’s attack, while Alvarez’s goal provided a timely boost after a difficult start to the campaign.

The result leaves Atletico with four points from their opening three matches in the Champions League league phase.
