Ligue 1: Giroud rescues point for Lille against Brest

Lille missed the opportunity to climb to the top of Ligue 1 after being held to a 1-1 draw by Brest at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy on Saturday, with Olivier Giroud scoring from the penalty spot to rescue a point for the hosts.

Brest took an early lead in the sixth minute when Mama Baldé turned the ball into the net following a deflected effort from Gautier Lloris.

Joris Chotard’s corner created confusion in the Lille penalty area before Lloris’ attempt took a decisive touch off Baldé and wrong-footed goalkeeper Orlando Gill.

The visitors maintained their advantage until half-time, with Lille struggling to create clear-cut opportunities in a largely uneventful first half.

Lille stepped up their attacking efforts after the restart and came close to equalising when Tanguy Nianzou headed wide from close range after Brest goalkeeper Egil Selvik had denied Benjamin André.

The home side eventually drew level in the 64th minute after Bradley Locko brought down Ethan Mbappé inside the penalty area.

Referee Clément Turpin pointed to the spot, and Giroud calmly converted to register his first goal since the opening weekend of the season.

Buoyed by the equaliser, Lille pushed for a winner in the closing stages, but Brest remained organised defensively.

Selvik produced an impressive save to keep out Nabil Bentaleb’s free-kick and preserve a point for the visitors.

The result extended Lille’s unbeaten home run in Ligue 1 to four matches and lifted them above Monaco into second place in the standings.

However, they missed the chance to move to the top of the table.

Brest, meanwhile, continued their encouraging run of form under Julien Lachuer, having suffered just one defeat in their first four away league matches of the 2026/27 campaign.
