Jigawa Assembly begins work on constitution amendment bill

Jigawa Assembly begins woThe Jigawa State House of Assembly has commenced preparations to consider the Constitution Amendment Bill forwarded by the National Assembly, with the Speaker, Haruna Dangyatim, assuring that the process will be completed within the stipulated deadline.

Dangyatim disclosed this on Friday during an interaction with journalists at his office in the Assembly Complex, Dutse.

He said the bill had been transmitted to state Houses of Assembly for consideration and concurrence, adding that Jigawa lawmakers would complete the process before the end-of-month deadline.

“We have received the Constitution Amendment Bill from the National Assembly, and I want to assure you that we will do the needful before the deadline given to all state assemblies which is the end of this month,” he said.

The Speaker explained that the House had 30 days from the date of receiving the communication to conclude its legislative consideration of the proposed amendments.

“Within the stipulated timeline contained in the letter of the bill, we are given 30 days to complete the legislative work on the bill from the date we received the letter,” Dangyatim stated.

He disclosed that the Assembly had constituted a committee to study the proposed amendments and submit recommendations based on the interests and concerns of residents of the state.

According to him, the exercise provides an opportunity to address areas of the 1999 Constitution that require clarification or improvement while strengthening democratic governance.

“We are studying the document thoroughly to ensure that our position aligns with the aspirations of our people,” he said.

He added that the Assembly would consult relevant stakeholders, including traditional institutions, civil society organisations and professional groups, as part of the consideration process.

The Speaker assured that the lawmakers would be guided by transparency and the broader interests of the state and country.
