La Liga: Real Betis beat Villarreal 2-1 in comeback win

Real Betis came from a goal down to beat Villarreal 2-1 in their LaLiga clash at the Estadio de la Cerámica on Sunday, with goalkeeper Álvaro Valles producing a superb display to help secure all three points.

Villarreal made the brighter start and took the lead in the 29th minute when Gerard Moreno converted from close range after Renato Veiga played a smart pass into the area.

Betis responded strongly and drew level 10 minutes later through Cucho Hernández, who reacted quickest to a rebound before slotting the ball into the net.

The visitors then completed their comeback just four minutes later. Natan found the net with a left-footed finish from a corner routine to give Betis a 2-1 advantage going into the break.

Villarreal controlled much of the possession after the interval and finished with 62 per cent of the ball, but Betis created the clearer openings.

The visitors registered 26 shots compared with Villarreal’s 14 and produced seven big chances, while the hosts had two.

Valles proved particularly important as Villarreal pushed for an equaliser.

The Betis goalkeeper made seven saves, including several from inside the penalty area, to preserve his side’s lead and frustrate the hosts.

Villarreal also threatened from set pieces and hit the woodwork, while their attacks were repeatedly disrupted by the Betis defence.

The hosts were caught offside five times compared with Betis’ two.

Despite Villarreal’s territorial dominance and superior passing numbers, Betis were more effective in the decisive areas of the pitch.

Their ability to exploit counter-attacks and defend under pressure helped them hold on for a valuable away victory.
