Billionaire financiers, Todd Boehly and Mark Walter are reportedly close to reaching an agreement to sell their minority stakes in Chelsea to fellow co-owner Clearlake Capital.
Boehly was a key figure in the consortium that acquired the Premier League club from Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich in 2022.
Since the takeover, Boehly has attracted criticism over the club’s performances and recruitment, with Chelsea securing Champions League qualification only once during the period.
There have also been reports of disagreements between Boehly and Clearlake co-owner Behdad Eghbali over the direction and management of the club.
According to Bloomberg, Boehly and Walter are now nearing a deal that would see Clearlake increase its ownership by acquiring their respective stakes.
Both Boehly and Walter currently hold 12.8 per cent minority stakes in Chelsea, while Clearlake is the club’s majority shareholder with a 61.5 per cent stake.
The reported development comes after Walter was investigated by US federal prosecutors and the Securities and Exchange Commission over allegations involving potential loan fraud worth between $16bn and $21bn.
