Real Madrid began their Champions League campaign with a 2-1 victory over Inter Milan at the Santiago Bernabéu on Tuesday, giving Jose Mourinho a winning return to European competition with the Spanish giants.
Madrid made a fast start and established a two-goal advantage within the opening 25 minutes.
Kylian Mbappé opened the scoring before Federico Valverde added a second to put the hosts firmly in control.
Inter refused to give up and pulled one goal back late in the match through Carlos Augusto, setting up a tense finish in the Spanish capital.
Mourinho’s side, however, held their nerve during the closing stages to secure all three points and open their league-phase campaign with a victory.
The result gives Real Madrid an early boost in their bid for another deep run in Europe, while Inter will have to regroup after narrowly missing out on a share of the points.
