EPL: Arsenal beat Chelsea 2-1 to maintain perfect start

Arsenal produced a spirited comeback to defeat Chelsea 2-1 in an entertaining London derby on Sunday and maintain their perfect start to the Premier League season.

Chelsea stunned the reigning champions inside 77 seconds when Morgan Rogers fired home from the edge of the box after Arsenal failed to properly clear a free-kick.

Arsenal quickly responded and thought they had equalised when Riccardo Calafiori found the net, but the effort was ruled out for offside following a VAR review.

The hosts eventually got their reward in the 25th minute when Kai Havertz beat Emiliano Martinez at his near post with a powerful effort from outside the box.

Chelsea remained dangerous despite Arsenal’s pressure and came close to restoring their lead before half-time.

Rogers curled an effort narrowly wide before Pedro Neto struck the post in first-half stoppage time.

Arsenal completed the turnaround five minutes after the interval.

Martin Odegaard finished a well-worked team move, collecting Christos Tzolis’ pass after Havertz cleverly allowed the ball to run through to him.

Chelsea pushed for an equaliser but Arsenal continued to create the clearer opportunities.

Martinez produced excellent saves to deny Bukayo Saka and Ezri Konsa as the champions searched for a third goal.

The visitors came closest late on when Estevao unleashed a curling effort in the 89th minute, but David Raya produced an impressive save to tip the ball over the crossbar.

Arsenal held on to secure a 2-1 victory, leaving them level with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League after three matches.

Chelsea, despite the defeat, showed enough attacking quality to suggest they could remain firmly in contention among the leading teams this season.
