Paris Saint-Germain were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw against Rennes after Ferran Torres came off the bench to rescue a point for the French champions in an entertaining Ligue 1 opener at Roazhon Park on Sunday.
Rennes stunned PSG by taking a two-goal lead before half-time, with Sebastian Szymański opening the scoring in the ninth minute before Esteban Lepaul doubled the advantage shortly before the break.
Despite dominating possession, PSG struggled to turn their control into goals.
Luis Enrique’s side had 72 per cent of the ball in the first half and created several opportunities, but Rennes defended stubbornly and made the most of their chances.
PSG responded immediately after the interval, with Torres and Mika Godts introduced to inject more attacking threat.
The changes helped shift the momentum as the visitors increased the pressure on Rennes.
Torres pulled one back in the 71st minute, finishing a Fabián Ruiz pass to give PSG hope of a comeback.
Eleven minutes later, the Spanish forward completed the turnaround with a well-taken header from another Ruiz delivery.
The equaliser capped an outstanding 45-minute display from Torres, who scored with both of his shots and finished the game with a Sofascore rating of 8.6, the highest of any player.
Ruiz also played a major role in PSG’s recovery, providing both assists in just 30 minutes on the pitch.
Vitinha was another standout performer, completing 87 of his 93 passes as PSG controlled the game for long periods.
PSG finished with 69 per cent possession, 19 shots and 10 corners, compared with Rennes’ nine shots and none from the corner flag.
The visitors also completed 665 passes to Rennes’ 250.
However, Rennes deserve credit for their resilience.
The hosts made 34 clearances, won 24 tackles and relied on goalkeeper Brice Samba to make three important saves as PSG pushed for a winner.
In the end, neither side could find a decisive third goal, leaving Rennes with a valuable point and PSG frustrated after failing to turn their dominance into victory.
