Real Betis began their 2026/27 La Liga campaign on a winning note after securing a narrow 1-0 victory over Copa del Rey holders Real Sociedad at home on Friday.
The closely contested encounter produced few clear-cut opportunities, with both sides showing caution and discipline in the opening stages.
Real Sociedad, buoyed by their Copa del Rey success last season, matched Betis for long periods and made it difficult for the hosts to find space in the final third.
The decisive moment arrived in the 63rd minute when Rodrigo Riquelme broke the deadlock with a well-taken volley.
The Spanish midfielder met Cucho Hernandez’s cross towards the far post and produced a composed finish to give Manuel Pellegrini’s side the advantage.
Real Sociedad attempted to respond after falling behind, but Betis maintained their defensive shape and managed the remainder of the match effectively.
The result gave Pellegrini’s team three valuable points from their opening fixture, while Sociedad were left to begin their title campaign with a defeat.
The victory provides Betis with an early boost as they look to build on last season’s performances and establish themselves among the leading sides in Spain.
For Real Sociedad, attention will now turn to their next league fixture as they seek to recover from the setback.
The opening weekend continues on Saturday when Jose Mourinho begins his second spell as Real Madrid coach away to Espanyol.
Barcelona, meanwhile, will launch their title defence on Sunday with a trip to Elche.
