Nottingham Forest owner, Evangelos Marinakis, has expressed his appreciation for Taiwo Awoniyi following the Nigerian striker’s permanent transfer to Coventry City.
Awoniyi officially ended his four-year spell with Forest on Monday after completing his move to the Championship club, managed by former Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard.
The 28-year-old joined Nottingham Forest from Bundesliga side Union Berlin in 2022 and quickly became an important figure in the club’s fight to remain in the Premier League during his first season.
Awoniyi scored 11 goals in 30 appearances across all competitions that campaign, helping Forest secure their top-flight status. He went on to make 103 appearances for the club, scoring 23 goals in total.
Despite his departure, Marinakis praised the forward for his contribution and insisted that Awoniyi would remain an important part of Forest’s history.
“Taiwo will always have a special place in the history of Nottingham Forest. He has been one of the defining figures in our journey and given our supporters moments of great joy that will never be forgotten,” he told the club’s official website.
“Throughout his time with us, Taiwo has shown great strength, determination and positivity, overcoming great challenges along the way.
“He embraced this Club from the first day and his passion and character are why he is so loved by everyone connected to Nottingham Forest.
“We thank Taiwo for everything he has given to this Club. He leaves with our gratitude, our respect and our very best wishes for the future. He will always be part of the Forest family and will always be welcomed home.”
Awoniyi will now begin a new chapter with Coventry City as he looks to revive his career and make an impact under Lampard.
