Awoniyi set to join Onyeka at Coventry City

Super Eagles striker, Taiwo Awoniyi, is set to join compatriot Frank Onyeka at Coventry City, with the newly promoted Premier League club closing in on his permanent transfer from Nottingham Forest.

Football transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano, confirmed the development on X, writing, “Coventry City agree deal to sign Taiwo Awoniyi from Nottingham Forest, here we go! Club to club agreement done, permanent move and also understand medical is now ongoing. New striker for Frank Lampard. #ccfc”

The 29-year-old will become the second Nigerian international recruited by Coventry manager Frank Lampard since the club secured promotion to the Premier League, following Onyeka’s permanent move from Brentford.

Onyeka initially joined Coventry on loan and made 14 Championship appearances, scoring once and providing an assist as the club secured promotion and ended a 25-year absence from the English top flight.

Awoniyi joined Nottingham Forest from Union Berlin in 2022 and spent four seasons at the City Ground.

He scored 23 goals and provided six assists in 103 appearances across all competitions, with 21 of those goals coming in 90 Premier League outings.

The forward, who helped Nigeria win the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup, entered the final year of his Forest contract before agreeing to the move.

Before joining Union Berlin, Awoniyi had spells with Mainz 05, Royal Excel Mouscron, Gent, NEC Nijmegen and FSV Frankfurt.

His Premier League experience is expected to prove valuable to Coventry as Lampard builds a squad capable of competing in the top flight.
