Super Eagles striker, Taiwo Awoniyi, has reportedly bid farewell to his Nottingham Forest teammates and supporters, fuelling expectations that his proposed move to Coventry City is close to completion.
Awoniyi received a guard of honour from his Forest teammates during their 2-0 pre-season victory over Brest at the City Ground before acknowledging the supporters following his substitution.
Forest manager Olivier Glasner confirmed the farewell gesture, telling Forest TV, “The striker received a guard of honour from the Forest squad as he walked out at the City Ground.
“A very good atmosphere, supportive, and a great relationship between the stand and the team. It is the most important thing and also I think Taiwo got the guard of honour because it looks like he will leave us.
“You can see the great bond between the players and the fans. A lot of applause and appreciation for Taiwo’s performances over the last couple of years.”
The development comes amid reports that Awoniyi is on the verge of joining newly promoted Coventry City on a permanent deal.
Coventry are understood to have agreed a fee of around £17m, approximately N31bn, with Forest for the Nigerian striker, who has reportedly already undergone his medical.
Awoniyi’s future at Forest had become uncertain after he struggled for consistent playing time, particularly with Chris Wood and Igor Jesus ahead of him in the club’s attacking hierarchy.
Despite his difficulties, the 28-year-old finished last season strongly, scoring three goals and providing two assists in his final six appearances to help Forest retain their Premier League status.
A transfer to Coventry could provide Awoniyi with the opportunity to secure regular football and rediscover the form that made him an important part of Forest’s attack after his arrival from Union Berlin.
