Newcastle captain Guimaraes nears Arsenal move

Arsenal are on the verge of completing the signing of Newcastle United captain, Bruno Guimaraes after making a major breakthrough in negotiations for the Brazil international.

The Gunners have been pursuing the experienced midfielder for several weeks, and the transfer is now entering its final stages after both clubs moved closer to reaching a full agreement.

According to BBC Sport, which first reported on July 30 that Guimaraes was expected to join the Premier League champions, only the final formalities remain before the deal is officially completed.

Guimaraes is currently with Newcastle’s squad at their pre-season training camp in La Manga, Spain, but is awaiting permission to leave the camp so he can complete the remaining steps of his move to the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal are also preparing for the 28-year-old to undergo a medical later this week ahead of the announcement.

While neither club has confirmed the financial details, sources indicate the transfer package could be worth up to £80 million.

The Brazilian midfielder has made it clear that he wants to join Mikel Arteta’s side after emerging as Arsenal’s preferred option to strengthen the heart of midfield ahead of the new campaign.

Guimaraes arrived at Newcastle from French side Lyon in January 2022 and quickly established himself as one of the Premier League’s standout midfielders.

His leadership qualities earned him the captain’s armband, and he has played a key role in Newcastle’s progress in recent seasons.

Negotiations between Arsenal and Newcastle have focused on the finer details of the agreement, with both clubs now understood to be treating the transfer as a formality before it is officially confirmed.
