Top five Arsenal signings from Real Madrid

Arsenal have only completed a handful of direct signings from Real Madrid, but those transfers have produced some of the club’s most memorable players.

With the Gunners reportedly considering a sensational move for Vinícius Júnior, interest has resurfaced in the players who previously swapped the Santiago Bernabéu for north London.

From a World Cup Golden Boot winner nearing the twilight of his career to the captain leading Arsenal’s resurgence, Planet Football on Monday ranked the five players the club have signed from the Spanish giants.

5. Davor Šuker

Davor Šuker joined Arsenal in 1999 after enjoying a successful spell at Real Madrid and playing a starring role for Croatia at the 1998 FIFA World Cup.

The prolific striker, however, was unable to replicate his best form in England. He managed eight Premier League goals in 22 appearances, a decent return, but his stint at Highbury was largely eclipsed by Nicolas Anelka’s departure and Thierry Henry’s arrival.

Henry quickly established himself as Arsenal’s leading striker and went on to become one of the club’s greatest-ever players.

4. Dani Ceballos

Dani Ceballos arrived at Arsenal on loan from Real Madrid during the formative stages of Mikel Arteta’s tenure.

The Spanish midfielder impressed at times, particularly as Arsenal lifted the FA Cup in 2020, but his performances were not enough to earn a permanent transfer.

While he displayed excellent technique and composure on the ball, he failed to cement a regular place in Arteta’s long-term plans.

Following two loan spells in north London, Ceballos returned to Madrid, where he continued to play only a limited role.

3. Julio Baptista

Nicknamed “La Bestia”, Julio Baptista remains one of Arsenal’s most intriguing former players.

The Brazilian forward was capable of producing moments of exceptional quality, most notably his remarkable four-goal display against Liverpool at Anfield. However, inconsistency prevented him from making a lasting impact.

Since he joined on loan, Arsenal assumed minimal financial risk, and despite his mixed performances, his spell is still fondly remembered by many supporters.

2. Mesut Özil

Mesut Özil’s move from Real Madrid in 2013 marked one of Arsenal’s most high-profile signings of the modern era.

The German playmaker made an immediate impact with his vision, creativity and remarkable assist record, reminding fans why he had been regarded among the world’s elite attacking midfielders.

Özil played a key role in helping Arsenal secure two FA Cup titles before his relationship with the club deteriorated towards the end of his time in north London.

1. Martin Ødegaard

Martin Ødegaard tops the list as Arsenal’s most successful signing from Real Madrid.

After initially arriving on loan, the Norwegian midfielder completed a permanent move and developed into one of Mikel Arteta’s most influential players.

Now Arsenal captain, Ødegaard has become the driving force behind the club’s revival, combining leadership, creativity and consistency to establish himself as one of the defining figures of the current era.
