Ghana beat WAFCON debutants Cape Verde 2-0 in Group D opener

Ghana began their 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations journey on a winning note after defeating tournament newcomers Cape Verde 2-0 in their Group D opener on Wednesday.

The Black Queens wasted little time asserting themselves at the Moulay Rachid Stadium, taking the lead in the sixth minute through Doris Boaduwaa.

The forward latched onto a well-timed pass from Portia Boakye before calmly slotting home to hand Ghana an early advantage.

Cape Verde attempted to fight back but found it difficult to break through Ghana’s organised backline, as the Black Queens continued to dictate the pace of the game.

Ghana doubled their lead nine minutes after the restart when Cape Verde defender Eleia Vieira inadvertently diverted the ball into her own net, leaving the debutants with an uphill task.

Despite their efforts, Cape Verde could not reduce the deficit, allowing Ghana to comfortably see out the encounter and claim maximum points.

The convincing victory gives the Black Queens a perfect start to their WAFCON 2026 campaign and temporarily sends them to the top of Group D.
