A 13-year-old boy has died and several others sustained injuries after a fountain collapsed during celebrations of Spain’s FIFA World Cup triumph in western Spain, according to local authorities and media reports.
In a statement shared on Facebook, the Ciudad Rodrigo City Council confirmed the tragedy.
“The city hall of Ciudad Rodrigo expresses its sadness and presents its condolences for the death of a boy of 13,” the municipality said.
“What should have been a celebration of Spain’s team in the football World Cup turned into tragedy,” it said, adding that several others were injured.
Emergency services said they were alerted to the incident shortly after midnight.
“A few minutes after 12:30 am local time, rescue services received calls over a fountain collapsing on numerous people,” emergency services said in a post on X, adding that another youth had been injured.
According to local media, the structure gave way after a large number of fans climbed onto it while celebrating Spain’s World Cup success, the country’s first since lifting the trophy in 2010.
The victory triggered jubilant scenes across Spain, with thousands of supporters gathering in public squares, streets and other landmarks to celebrate the national team’s achievement.
Festivities were reported in several cities as fans waved Spanish flags, sang chants and climbed monuments and other public structures in celebration.
Authorities have repeatedly warned against climbing public infrastructure during mass celebrations, noting that such spontaneous gatherings have occasionally resulted in accidents and injuries.
