The Oyo State Government has confirmed that four people were killed and several others sustained injuries following a violent clash between rival groups in the Ojoo area of Akinyele Local Government Area, Ibadan.
The government also assured residents that those responsible for the violence would be apprehended and prosecuted.
The clash, which started late Tuesday and continued into Wednesday morning, was reportedly triggered by the killing of a commercial tricycle rider during a disagreement linked to a failed Point-of-Sale (POS) transaction.
The unrest disrupted commercial activities in the area, with traders at the Ojoo Motor Park and nearby businesses shutting down over security concerns.
Residents said the incident began after a network failure prevented confirmation of a cash withdrawal made through a POS operator. According to eyewitness accounts, the tricycle rider had already received the cash when the transaction could not be completed due to poor network service.
An eyewitness, identified as Iya Kadijat, alleged that the rider offered his tricycle, phone and keys as assurance that he would not abscond while the issue was being resolved. She claimed the argument later turned violent after another individual allegedly slapped and stabbed the rider. The victim was rushed to hospital but later died from his injuries.
The rider’s death reportedly sparked outrage among his colleagues and associates, leading to retaliatory attacks that escalated into widespread violence.
Another resident, Azeez Olamiposi, alleged that an armed man carrying a rifle appeared during the disturbance before another individual allegedly opened fire, killing one person and injuring several others. The claims have not been independently verified.
Speaking during an assessment visit to the affected community on behalf of Governor Seyi Makinde, Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal described those behind the violence as criminal elements and appealed for calm.
He said the government remained committed to restoring peace in Ojoo and maintaining the state’s reputation for peaceful coexistence and development.
Lawal further assured residents that security agencies had been directed to identify, arrest and prosecute everyone involved in the violence as efforts continue to restore normalcy to the area.
