Yoruba elders’ council backs Tinubu for 2027 re-election bid

The Yoruba Council of Elders on Monday declared its support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in the 2027 general election.

The Punch reported that the group made its position known in a statement issued in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, by its Secretary-General, Dipo Oyewole, saying its endorsement was based on the administration’s progress in economic reforms, infrastructure delivery and efforts to strengthen national stability.

According to the council, its decision followed a review of the Tinubu administration’s performance since it assumed office in May 2023, adding that although the policies had been tough, early indicators showed they were beginning to yield positive outcomes.

It said continuity in leadership remained necessary for Nigeria’s progress after assessing ongoing developments in the country.

The YCE stated, “President Tinubu inherited enormous economic and security challenges but had demonstrated courage and determination in addressing them through far-reaching reforms. The removal of fuel subsidy, exchange rate reforms, and efforts to attract investments were difficult decisions that required time to produce desired outcomes.

“The administration should be given the opportunity to consolidate its programmes. Despite the initial hardships associated with some of the reforms, there were signs that the economy was gradually stabilising.”

The council further commended the Federal Government’s interventions in key sectors including infrastructure, education, agriculture and social investment, describing them as foundational steps toward long-term development.

It added that Nigerians should support Tinubu’s re-election in 2027 to ensure policy continuity and sustained implementation of government programmes aimed at repositioning the country.

The group stressed that its endorsement was not driven by ethnic considerations but by what it described as an objective evaluation of government performance and prospects.

“The endorsement was not based on ethnic considerations but on what the YCE described as a realistic appraisal of the administration’s performance and prospects. YCE remains committed to promoting national unity, good governance and the welfare of all Nigerians, irrespective of ethnic, religious or political affiliations.”

The council expressed optimism that with continued support and consistent policies, Nigeria would overcome its present challenges and achieve stronger economic growth and political stability.
